Archery Assessment

What is Involved on the Day

On the day of your archery assessment, we will primarily check to ensure you are safe to shoot and have prior experience with archery. The assessment typically lasts up to one hour and includes a series of practical and theoretical checks to confirm your readiness to shoot safely and effectively.

What People Should Have

To ensure a smooth and safe assessment, please come prepared with the following:

  • Kit: Your own bow and arrows, if you have them. If not, equipment will be provided.
  • Suitable Clothing: Wear comfortable, fitted clothing. Avoid open-toe shoes and loose clothing that could get caught in the bowstring. Long hair should be tied back, and jewellery should be minimal.

Key Things the Coaches Will Look For

During the assessment, coaches will focus on several key areas:

  • Safety: Demonstrating a thorough understanding of range safety rules and guidelines. If you need a refresher, please review the safety guidelines here.
  • Ability to Shoot Unsupervised: Showing that you can handle the equipment and shoot accurately without constant supervision.
  • Knowledge of Range Safety: Understanding and adhering to all safety protocols on the range.

The checks performed by the coaches are often subtle and may not be immediately noticeable to the archer. These checks ensure that all participants are compliant with safety standards and are capable of shooting safely.

Returning Members

For those returning to archery after a break, the assessment will also consider your previous experience and how long it has been since you last shot. The Archery GB's Range Returners programme is designed to help lapsed members return to the sport they love. Depending on your prior experience, you might only need a refresher session, or you may require a few more sessions to get back into the swing of things.

Coaching and Feedback

Please note that one-to-one coaching is reserved for club members. Coaching sessions are subject to coach availability and should be arranged through the club secretary via the contact us option on our website.

Assessment Outcome

At the end of the assessment, you will be informed whether you are cleared to shoot independently or if you need to enrol in a beginner's course for further training.

We look forward to seeing you at the range and helping you develop your archery skills!
